Can We Talk About Sex? The When, Why and How We Talk With Our Clients About Sex

Can We Talk About Sex? The When, Why and How We Talk With Our Clients About Sex

With Gwen Butler, LCSW, CST

CEs: 3

Sexuality is foundationally and fundamentally an essential part of our physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual lives. It is built into who we are as people. According to AASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists), “Sexuality is at the core of human personality; It’s not what you do, but who you are”. It is obvious that sexuality is paramount and integral to a person’s identity. Moreover sex, sexuality and sexual content, can be accessed on just about every social media platform today. It is perhaps one of the greatest areas of anxiety and depression for many, and yet many social workers and mental health professionals do not regularly explore sexuality unless clients present with a specific sexual concern.

This workshop will help participants confront their own barriers and concerns when it comes to the sex talk, as well as equip participants with language and intervention tools necessary for effective engagement.Learning Objectives

After our workshop, participants will:

  1. Know how to take a sexual history for individuals and couples.
  2. Have specific language and interventions in addressing issues of sexuality.
  3. Have developed a framework in addressing subjects of sexuality.

In the end, participants will have become more comfortable and even more engaging when talking with their clients about sex.
